Rain, clouds to keep minimum temp above normal

The continuing post-monsoon showers are likely to delay the onset of cold days by at least a week and keep minimum temperatures for this time of the year above normal in the state, including Pune.

The state is currently witnessing rain due to moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and a pro-rainfall system in the Arabian Sea. The city, meanwhile, recorded 3.7 mm rain from 8.30 am on Sunday to 8.30 am on Monday.

"A low pressure area over east-central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea persists. A trough in the lower level easterly runs from Rajasthan across east-central Arabian Sea, Konkan and Goa and the Gujarat region. These are pro-rainfall weather conditions," said Medha Khole, director (weather forecasting), India Meteorological Department (IMD).

She said, "Areas in Maharashtra, which are close to Gujarat, as also the coastal regions are expected to record more rainfall in the next six to seven days. This includes districts in northern Maharashtra including Nashik, Dhule,  Jalgaon and Nandurbar, as also the Konkan region including Dahanu, Mumbai and surrounding areas."

The IMD's weather report has also forecast that the city might witness rainfall or thundershowers in the next 48 hours.

Explaining the delay in the cold setting in, Khole said cloudy conditions due to the moisture incursion was leading to an increase in temperature. "The cloudy conditions will continue till next week. The absence of dry weather conditions and clear skies will result in comparatively hot weather conditions. The minimum temperatures will remain above normal for at least six to seven days," she said.

According to the IMD's daily weather report the minimum temperature, which is 13 degrees Celsius in Pune in November, was 21.1 degrees Celsius on Monday, with the maximum temperature being 30.7(+1) degrees Celsius.

jalgaon :- Chemical-free organic flavoured jaggery on the menu now

Closure of co-operative sugar factories in Marathwada and uncertainty about sugarcane harvesting encouraged two young farmers Abhijit Deshmukh and Prashant Mane to try their hand at making flavoured chemical-free organic jaggery.

Both have successfully produced mango, chocolate, strawberry, pineapple and cardamom flavoured jaggery in their jaggery making unit near Aurangabad.

Organic and chemical-free jaggery is recommended as a healthy option to sugar since it is a rich source of iron, folic acid, vitamin B and calcium.

Deshmukh, a commerce graduate, and Mane, who has obtained commercial pilot licence from the US, hit upon the idea of flavoured jaggery when they were eating ice cream in Mumbai with a group of friends about six months ago.

"It started as a joke that if ice cream can be made in so many flavours, why can't we make flavoured jaggery?" said Deshmukh, who grows sugarcane in his 16-acre farm on Waluj-Walmi road, about 20 km from Aurangabad.

"Both of us liked the idea, visited many places, sampled jaggery made in different parts of the state and outside, held discussions with experts and finally worked out the formulas. We obtained a loan of around Rs 50 lakh from a bank to start the Rs 90-lakh flavoured jaggery unit at Abhijit's farm on five acres of land, with a crushing capacity of 75 tonnes per day," said Mane.

"Though we started production a fortnight ago, a few works, including construction of a shed, are still in progress," Mane said.

"The flavoured jaggery is being well received by local malls, where one kg blocks are in demand. Markets in Jalna,  Jalgaon and Gujarat have also responded and we received a big order for mango flavoured jaggery in two kg and 10 kg blocks from Gujarat. Colour of our jaggery is natural golden-brown while chocolate flavoured jaggery gains the dark-brown colour," he explained.

"Farmers in our periphery agreed to supply us sugarcane in return for price on par with the sugar factories and instant cash that we offered them. We have employed about 200 people in our jaggery unit, including four teams of sugarcane harvesters each having 18 to 20 members. They go to the farmers enlisted with us, harvest the produce which we bring to the jaggery unit in four tractors. The production cost per tonne is between Rs 2,300 and 2,400, while we get between 110 and 120 kg of jaggery per tonne of cane," Deshmukh added.

Demand for flavoured jaggery is more in Gulf countries. "We have already approached people there to export our jaggery and if things go as planned, we have plans to open more such units in the district since our present unit can crush just 25,000 tonnes per year," said Mane.

More than half of 28 co-operative sugar factories in Marahtwada are closed. Six of the seven co-operative factories in Aurangabad with a crushing capacity of about 15 lakh tonnes each are non-functional for about four years. "We have also resolved to start a 500-tonne capacity non-sulphur sugar factory near the town," they said.

Expressing disenchantment about the co-operative sector, Deshmukh and Mane said they did not wish to go the co-operative way, where one person takes initiative, makes a good start and over a period of time, other people take over and spoil everything, they said.

Lakshmamma from Tumkur in Karnataka received the 100,000th Aadhaar number.

"Crossing one lakh enrolments in this short span of time is a welcome milestone for us," Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of the UIDAI, said in a statement.

"And the credit for this goes far beyond the UIDAI team. A lot of people - state government officials, the enrolling agencies, as well as the UIDAI team, its TDU (Technology Development Unit) , PMU (Project Management Unit), sabbatical resources and volunteers are working together, and put in substantial effort towards getting the enrolments done."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had on September 29, 2010 issued the first Aadhaar number to Ranjna Sadashiv Sonwane, a tribal woman from Tembhali village in Nandurbar, Maharashtra.

The UIDAI plans to issue 600 million Aadhaar numbers in the next four years to citizens.

"Over these last six weeks, the UIDAI has rapidly ramped up enrolments for the Aadhaar number across seven states - Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand , Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra," the statement said.

Life Insurance Corporation of India and Indira Gandhi National Open University have also come on board as registrars for Aadhaar numbers, and have started enrolments.

More registrars are expected to begin Aadhaar enrolments in the next few weeks, UIDAI said.

jalgaon :- RSS to hold meetings in December for Ram temple

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Monday said it was in favour of building a Ram temple at Ayodhya and would be organising public meetings all over the country in December to demonstrate people's support for the call.

Disclosing the resolutions adopted at the three-day meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Karyakari Mandal of the RSS held at Jalgaon (Maharashtra), its national executive member Ram Madhav said: "We will hold public meetings at the block-levels nationwide throughout December in support of Ram temple at Ayodhya." Madhav was addressing a press conference in the city.

The Sangh leader said the organisation was getting feelers that the general public opinion was in favour of the temple at the disputed site. "After the Allahabad High Court verdict, now there is court seal too on the dispute site being the birthplace of Ram," Madhav reasoned.

The two other resolutions adopted at the meeting included fighting Congress efforts to defame RSS and defending Kashmir as the integral part of India, the spokesperson said. Madhav stated the Sangh believed that the accession of Kashmir was "full and final" the moment the then ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Singh, signed the instrument of accession on October 26, 1947. "The same document had legal sanctity for accession of other the princely states too, so Kashmir cannot be treated differently," the spokesperson asserted.

Jain Irrigation to complete MIS capacity expansion by January

Jalgaon-based Jain Irrigation Systems (JISL) will wrap up the 40% capacity addition in micro-irrigation systems (MIS) in two months, said managing director Anil Jain.

The company has lined up a capex of Rs400 crore for this fiscal, of which Rs160-170 crore is for MIS.

“The expansion will mostly be at our Jalgaon facility and also in Udumalpet (in Tamil Nadu),” Jain said. JISL has one more plant in Hyderabad for MIS, which is divided into drip and sprinkler irrigation.

Jain said it would be difficult to specify the capacity post expansion. “There are different things we make for MIS and it keeps changing so it’s not possible to put a number to the capacity in terms of tonnage,” he said.

Other than MIS, JISL is adding 25,000 tonnes of mango pulp-processing capacity, taking it to 80,000 tonnes per annum (tpa). JISL is the world’s third biggest processor of mangoes and the second biggest producer of dehydrated onions. It also processes other fruits like banana and papaya.

JISL last week acquired an 80% stake in UK-based Sleaford Quality Foods, its second buy in the food processing space.
JISL will also by March take its PVC pipe capacity to 150,000 tonnes, an addition of 25%.

MIS accounts for half of JISL’s revenues, with PVC pipes and food processing contributing 29% and 15%, respectively.

JALGAON :- Firecracker units in city a big draw for migrant labourers

Firecracker factories in the city are flooded with migrant labourers from Rajasthan and Maharashtra, who come here six months ahead of Diwali and Gujarati New Year to work in these units.

At Ambica Factory in Raipur Chakla, for example, there are nearly 70-80 labourers from Rajasthan, mainly from Udaipur and Barmer districts.

Bhanuji, a labourer at the factory, said, “I have been coming to Ahmedabad for the last eight years with my family. We come here ahead of Diwali to work in these factories. My sons and even my grandson, who is 10, are working here for the last two months making firecrackers.”

At China King Fire Works, there are several migrant labourers from Sangli, Solapur, Jalgaon and neighbouring districts of Maharashtra.

Badruddin Saiyyed, the owner of the factory, said, “Gujarat is an attraction for these labourers as they get more wages here. Majority of them are from Sangli, which itself is a hub for units making firecrackers. However, these labourers come here for more wages. They get hardly Rs 50 per day in Mahasrashtra for this work.”
The labourers working in firecracker units in Ahmedabad say they get anything between Rs 100 to Rs 150 per day as wages. Moreover, factories here provide them with accommodation and food in their premises.
Kalpesh Desai, owner of Jay Ambe Fireworks in Vatva, said, “We provide them shelter in small hutments in the neighbourhood for a few months. We also accommodate them in our premises and provide them with meals in morning and afternoon.” The young among labourers, like 16-year-old Shayamla, say getting different kind of firecrackers as gift is reason enough for them to come back next year.

Statewide RTO raids in professional tax scam

The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) conducted raids at Regional Transport Offices (RTO) in Navi Mumbai, Chinchwad, Pimpri, Kolhapur, Sangli, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, Dhule, Nandurbar and Ahmadnagar on Tuesday. They seized documents pertaining to professional tax from these offices although they are yet to make any arrests. The professional tax scam in the RTO could be a multi-crore one.

Almost ten days ago, ACB officials raided the Thane RTO office, following a tip-off that a racket was being run in Thane RTO whereby fake documents including bank challans relating to collection of professional tax from commercial vehicles were being made.

“The information was verified through a discreet inquiry, during which they succeeded in laying hands on a few bank challans, in connection with collection of professional tax, which were found to be fake. It was thus obvious that the amounts collected towards professional tax from commercial vehicles were being pocketed by RTO officials and their agents,” said an ACB official.

There was quite a bit of panic when the ACB officials visited several RTO offices at one go. Few of the RTO officials even started running. Licensing and registration agents who keep roaming around the premises started fleeing, leaving behind their belongings.

Niket Kaushik, additional commissioner of police, informed that the raids will continue and that a team of experts including RTO officers and auditors will examine the veracity of the documents.

India’s Jain Irrigation buys controlling stake of 80% in UK food firm Sleaford Quality Food Ltd

India’s Jain Irrigation announced it had bought a controlling stake of 80 per cent in the UK’s Sleafood Quality Food Ltd. Jain Irrigation is currently the largest fruit and vegetable processing firm in India and its acquisition of the UK Midlands based Sleaford Quality Food Ltd will cost it about 10 million pounds. The deal was done at about three times Sleaford Quality Food Ltd’s earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, as is the general norm for valuations and acquisitions in the food sector in the UK.

However, Jain has a call option for acquiring the remaining 20% stake in Sleaford. The UK firm is renowned for the supply of food ingredients to the Country’s food industry, both in the wholesale and retail space. Sleafood has been in business since for more than four decades now, with a large spectrum of food ingredients. Jain expects the acquisition to bring it one step closer to the UK market, with opportunity to enter into the large ethnic food market in the UK and possibility of addition of new products in Jain’s food division product range.

According to Anil Jain, managing director, the Indian firm’s food business is worth around Rs 520 crore and the investment marks a strategic move, as it serves as the firm’s entry point into the UK because Sleafood adds a threefold value to Jain. Other than that, the investment as well affords Jain the space to enter the retail market in UK. Even though the financial details were kept under wraps, analysts believe Sleaford is worth more than Rs 185 crore and the Jalgaon, India based firm must have paid more than Rs 150 crore to get 80% stake in the company.

Jain Irrigation is eyeing similar small-to-mid ticket buys to boost growth at its food processing division that is likely to clock 20 per cent topline growth in Financial Year 2011. Its food processing units do not run all through the year with supply limitations and crop seasonality rendering its plants idle for most part of the year, said Jain.

Jain Irrigation Systems is a multinational organization with global presence in 110 countries. The firm employs over 7,500 workers and manufactures a number of products, including drip and sprinkler irrigation  systems and components, integrated irrigation automation systems, PVC  and PE piping systems, plastic sheets, greenhouses, bio-fertilizers, solar water-heating systems, biogas plant on turnkey basis, wind hybrid energy and photovoltaic system.

Jain Irrigation acquires controlling stake in UK firm

India's biggest fruit and vegetable processing major, Jain Irrigation, has acquired controlling stakes of 80% in Midlands based UK food firm Sleaford Quality Food Ltd in around 10 million pounds deal.

The deal is understood to have been clinched at 3-4 times Sleafords ebidta (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization), as is the general norm for valuations and acquisitions in the food sector in UK.

Jain, with a turnover of over Rs 34 billion, also has a call option for acquiring the balance 20% stake in Sleaford - a noted supplier of food ingredients to food industry, both in the wholesale and retail space since 1968 - is based on an earn-out model over a period of four years. Sleaford is a family-owned firm of over 40 years with a large spectrum food ingredients range. The acquisition is perceived as bringing Jain one step closer to market, with opportunity to enter into large ethnic food market in the UK and possibility of addition of new products in Jains food division product range.

Jains food business is worth around Rs 520 crore. For the money were paying, we believe Sleaford affords us very good returns and adds to our top line. Through this deal, we will have direct access to the end user of our products, Jain MD Anil Jain told ET.

Jain cited a pre-agreement justifying his reluctance to spell out the actual value of the deal but maintained to ET Sleaford has been our customer for over 15 years. We chose it as an key entry point into UK because the company adds a three fold value to us. Our mango pulp, for instance, is mainly sold in India and the W Asia thus far and we see the UK market as having the potential to be tapped a lot more. Again, there is a big dry fruits market in the UK and that gives us the opportunity to expand our fruit portfolio by adding to our product line and bankign on Sleafords extensive distribution network in UK. The East Midland region of the UK, is an ideal location for distribution and sale in the entire United Kingdom. Again, since Sleaford caters to the wholesale, big food industry space and has a retail brand (Chef Williams) associated with it, this offers us both advantages. It also affords us the space to enter the retail market in UK.

James Arnold, Managing Director of Sleaford Quality Foods said, Jain is the perfect partner for our business. In addition to their strong product supply support, they bring excellent agricultural and food processing expertise to help improve the success of the business.

Sleafords product range covers a large spectrum of food ingredients including dehydrated vegetables, spices, herbs, dehydrated fruits, soup mixes, pulses, canned vegetables.

For the present, the family that owns Sleaford Ltd will continue to operate it and there will be no major personnel or management leadership changes, Jain said. Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd , with headquarters at Jalgaon in Maharashtra, is a pioneer company in water creation, sourcing, storage structures, micro irrigation systems, hi-tech agri inputs, greenhouse cultivation, manufacture of PVC pipes and piping systems, solar products etc.

It is also India's largest mango pulp processor in the organized sector and amongst the three largest processors in the world It is also the 2nd largest manufacturer of dehydrated onions in the world. Collectively, the company is the largest processor of fruits & vegetables in India.

NCP agrees to give Nanded seat to Cong in council polls

Beleaguered Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has received support from unexpected quarters, with coalition partner NCP agreeing to give up the Nanded local bodies constituency to the Congress for the upcoming elections to the State Legislative Council. Even as Chavan was in Delhi yesterday
to present his side of the story in the Adarsh society scam to the party highcommand, State Congress and NCP leaders met here to finalise the seat sharing pact for the November 27 biennial elections to the Upper House of the State Legislature for 11 seats.

As per the pact, NCP has decided to leave Nanded local bodies seat for the Congress despite having its own sitting MLC. Nanded is the home district of Chavan. However, it did not accept Congress' demand to leave Yavatmal, the home town of state Congress chief Manikrao Thakre.

From the NCP side, Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal, Power Minister Ajit Pawar, Home Minister R R Patil and state NCP chief Madhukar Pichad were present, while the Congress was represented by Thakre, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane and Textile Minister Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan.

The Congress will contest the Nashik Graduates seat as the independent candidate was a rebel Congressman and joined the party after winning the by-election last year, defeating an NCP nominee, NCP spokesman Prakash Binsale said.

The NCP will field its nominees in Aurangabad teachers, Jalgaon, Sangli-Satara, Yavatmal, Pune, and the Bhandara-Gondia local bodies constituencies.

State NCP president Madhukar Pichad and his Congress counterpart Thakre will decide whether to provide outside support or field candidates for Nagpur and Konkan teachers constituencies, and Amravati graduates seat.

The notification for the polls will be issued on November 3 and the last date of withdrawal of nomination is November 13.

Food will never become cheaper as expenses rise

Never mind wishful thinking by the government and RBI. Food will never be cheaper than what it is today. Not this year. Or in future. The reason is simple. Growing food in India has become extremely expensive. Crops are pricier even before they reach the market and face the pulls and tugs of rising local demand and exports.

The farmer’s single biggest cost now is labour. Farm labour wages have doubled in the last year across states and crops. The worst affected are fruits and vegetables because they need careful tending. Onion farmers in Jalgaon last year paid Rs 50 daily for a woman to plant seeds, do the weeding, and later harvest the bulbs. This year, she wants Rs 100 per day. Men demand Rs 150. Cheap labour that gave Indian horticulture its competitive edge is blunting rapidly.

Field crops are faring no better. Maharashtra sugarcane farmers have agreed with labour unions to pay 25% more for harvesting the crop. Picking cotton is India’s largest on-farm employment opportunity. This year cotton farmers are paying Rs 4.50 for picking each kilo, again double last year. Cost of ploughing, sowing, spraying and weeding each acre is extra. The total labour cost in the current season has touched Rs 10 per kilo.

In parts of Punjab and Haryana, you can’t get workers at any price, leaving this summer’s paddy standing forlorn in the fields. What has changed? The farm worker’s negotiating power. For the first time. With free monthly ration and government mazdoori available for Rs 100 a day, landless labourers needn’t beg neighbours for work. Work is chasing them. It’s a heady feeling. And disconcerting for the rest of the countryside.

While labour costs per hectare are zooming, yields per hectare are stagnant. That’s like running a factory at 30-40% capacity. Obviously, the per unit cost swells. Logically, rich farmers growing cash crops should be keenest to increase output. Not so.

UP cane farmers, Punjab grain farmers, Andhra paddy farmers haven’t used high-tech varieties in years. Only cotton farmers have shown nous in adopting BT technology to double output in six years. Without dramatically boosting volumes, farmers can’t even consider reducing product prices. No FMCG company would either.

With stagnant yields, bumper harvests only occur when more acres are diverted to a crop, and aided by good weather. Since cultivable land has maxed out, this bounty is at the cost of some other crop. Farmville is nothing to our farmland passing-the-parcel. Government’s MSP acts like the music played randomly to declare a winner. Pulses won this year. Wheat MSP is a deliberate disincentive because the 2% increase doesn’t cover costs.

As a result, inflation merely hops from pulses to cereals to sugar to oils to vegetables. It never goes away. Yield fatigue implies returns are still too volatile to incentivise technology upgradation. Food prices have to spiral and stay there if India wishes to feed itself.
