jalgaon :- Jail staffers in dock for taking away underwear of accused

Jalgaon  district prison superintendent Bhaidas Dhole faces a criminal case and may even lose his job-all for a measly Rs 480.

Dhole has been found guilty of taking away the paltry sum from Ashwin Balsara, an under trial who recently was released on bail from the Jalgaon prison. Shockingly, the jail officials also fleeced the criminal of his innerwear. Dhole's subordinates-gatekeeper Madhav Pawar, assistant gatekeeper Gulab Patel and Vijay Netkar who is in-charge of frisking the undertrials when they leave or enter the prison premises-have also been booked for the crime.

In a rare case, Balsara filed a harassment compliant against the jail authorities with the Human Rights Commission, Pune. Taking cognizance of the complaint, the commission's additional director-general Rajesh Sonawane, in a landmark decision, ordered a probe into the allegations.

"Jail authorities conducted a probe. They found that prima facie, the concerned officials had indulged in malpractice. On these grounds,

a criminal complaint was lodged against the four at Jalgaon Peth police station," said, Dhananjay Kulkarni, additional superintendent of police, Jalgaon.

Medha Gadgil, principal secretary with the home department (appeals and security), said, "It's a serious issue. The department has asked for a detail probe. Depending on the probe findings, action will be initiated against the erring officials."

"Balsara has many cases pending against him. He is very smart and may have exaggerated the facts to malign the image of jail officials."
